Turn the thermostat down, let the heater cool, and switch off the circuit breaker before vacuuming. Remove only covers designed to come off, clean dust with a brush attachment, wipe surfaces with a barely damp cloth, and dry everything completely. Never spray liquid into the heater or bend its fins. This applies to electric and hot-water baseboard units.
Start by removing loose grit with a soft broom, dry microfiber dust mop, or vacuum set for hard floors without a beater bar. Then clean small areas with a barely damp microfiber mop and a cleaner approved for your floor’s finish. Wipe spills promptly, leave no standing water, and stop if boards swell, the finish turns cloudy, or a stain does not lift easily.
Start by identifying the blind material, then lower and close the slats. Remove loose dust with a dry microfiber cloth or vacuum brush, working from top to bottom. For washable vinyl, aluminum, plastic, or faux wood, wipe with a thoroughly wrung-out cloth and a few drops of mild dish soap. Use minimal moisture on wood, bamboo, fabric, and cellular blinds, and dry every surface fully.
To fix uneven paint, let the surface dry completely, identify whether the problem is color, texture, or sheen, then sand raised areas and remove all dust. Prime stains, repairs, or bare patches before repainting the entire wall or defined section with a properly loaded roller. Stop if the wall is damp, peeling extensively, or the finish stays uneven after preparation.
Clean window screens by removing them when the manufacturer allows, brushing or vacuuming away loose dust, then washing the mesh and frame with mild dish soap and water. Rinse gently, let each screen dry completely, inspect for bent frames or torn mesh, and reinstall it in the same position. If removal is unsafe or impossible, clean in place without forcing the frame.
To remove rust from bare cast iron, scrub the rusty areas with steel wool or a cast-iron rust eraser, then wash with warm soapy water. Rinse, dry immediately and completely, and apply a very thin coat of cooking oil before re-seasoning according to the pan or oil maker’s instructions. Stop if you find cracks, deep corrosion or damaged enamel.
To clean a leather couch, remove loose grit, then test a hidden spot. Wipe small sections with a barely damp microfiber cloth and a little mild, non-detergent soap mixed with lukewarm water. Remove soap with a second damp cloth, dry immediately, and use only manufacturer-approved conditioner. Stop if color transfers, the finish becomes tacky or the leather darkens unevenly.
To clean slate tiles, sweep or vacuum away grit, then mop with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap or a pH-neutral slate cleaner. Use a soft-bristled brush for textured areas, wring the mop nearly dry, rinse away cleaner residue and dry the tiles. Do not use vinegar, acidic products, abrasive powders or steam.
To remove surface rust from metal, brush away loose flakes, then apply either a baking-soda-and-water paste or lemon juice with salt. Leave the treatment for a few hours, scrub, rinse, and dry completely. For heavier rust, use a labeled rust remover according to its instructions. Stop if the metal is deeply pitted, thin, plated, or structurally weakened.
To measure for curtains, first decide whether the rod will sit inside or outside the window recess. Measure the planned rod width, then measure from the rod or track to the desired bottom edge. Choose fullness based on the fabric, divide the finished width between panels, and record every measurement with width listed before length.
